Houston Chronicle Print Readership Falls Faster Than Any Other in Top Ten Markets

The national trend of declining newspaper readership hits home in Houston. Today, as budgets are tightening and Americans are looking for places to make cuts, more and more are turning away from traditional newspapers and relying on free online news sources. National sites like CNN.com or local sources like Chron.com put out up-to-the-minute news updates 24/7 and are seeing an increase in readership and ad sales.

Houston Chronicle circulation drops 11.66%.

National Trend of Declining Newspaper Readership Hits Home In Houston
Circulation of the only daily newspaper in Houston is down 11.66 percent – the biggest percentage drop of any top-ten circulation newspaper in the country, reports Editor & Publisher. However, Houston Chronicle continues to see growth with their online effort, Chron.com.

As printed newspaper readership rates decline across the country, more readers are steadily going to the Internet to get their news. According to the Pew Research Center, more than one-third of Americans report getting their news online at least three days a week.

The Stats:
Here are the top 25 daily papers ranked for the six-month period ending September 2008 based on a Monday-through-Friday average, according to the new FAS-FAX from the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The percent change compares this period to the same period a year ago.
